Colvin Davis began quail hunting with his father as a small boy and says he
can not remember a time in his life when he didn’t have a bird dog.
In the early 60’s he traveled to Manitoba, Canada with John S. Gates and his
son John Rex, both members of the Field Trial Hall of Fame. These summer
trips to the Canadian prairies to work bird dogs have been a part of his life
now for over 40 years. He established his own camp in Broomhill, Manitoba
in 1983.
He and his dogs have won over 40 major Open All-Age Championships titles
(>Major Wins); many runner-up laurels, hundreds of placements with
dozens of dogs. The list includes the coveted National Championship with
Quicksilver Pink, a contender he piloted to ten Open All-Age Championship
victories and the Purina Top Dog Award. Today she has her place in the Field
Trial Hall of Fame. Colvin has won titles in Championships such as the
National Free-For-All, four times; Southern Championship, three times;
Quail Championship Invitational, two times; and all Chicken Championships
on the Canadian prairies numerous times. He has to his credit three Purina
Top Dog Awards with three different dogs, two Handler of the Year Awards
and many other recognitions of excellence.
He formed the Broomhill Field Trial Association bringing field trials back to
the Manitoba prairies where they had been absence for over 30 years. Today
this Association hosts the Manitoba Championship, John S. Gates Memorial
Open Derby, and the Pelican Open All-Age, along with the Broomhill Open
All-Age. Davis established the Broomhill Field Trial Foundation, a scholarship
fund that benefits the children of that area. “This sport and the people
associated with it have been good to me, given me so much. Giving back to the
sport is what you do, the way I see it.” Two of Colvin’s longtime friends and
owners, Albert Necaise and Rick Stallilngs, established the J. F. “Tobe”
Stallings Memorial Scholarship several years ago for children in the
southwest Manitoba area.
In 2006, Colvin was elected to the Field Trial Hall of Fame. As for his election,
he says “Being voted into the Hall of Fame by my peers is one of the greatest
honors I could ever imagine. It is humbling. I thank all of those who thought
me worthy of this honor. I feel blessed to have been able to do what I love all
these years.”

Fame ads (click on pdfs below) that ran in the American Field in
spring/summer of 2006.
Mazie Davis works dogs with Colvin full time. She has reported most major
all-age events in the United States and Canada, taking some judging
assignments through the years also. She started reporting field trials over 20
years ago. She now spends her time at field trials scouting their string of dogs.
She also enjoys raising puppies and giving them the attention and
socialization so important during those formative first few weeks. She is
hoping to do a couple of litters a year of well planned breedings.
