News from the Prairie
Colvin and I have been having a great summer here in Broomhill. The cooler, wetter weather earlier in the season, though making it difficult for farmers to get their crops in, has been very conducive for dogs to find chickens. The birds, both chickens and Hungarians have been plentiful. The young dogs have made great progress, the older ones are tuned and ready for the upcoming trial season beginning with the Broomhill Open All Age, followed by the Saskatchewan trials and then back here in Broomhill for the Manitoba Championship, the John S. Gates Memorial Derby and the Pelican Open All Age.
Earlier this summer Blake Highfill visited us again. Blake’s time here was too short but we think he enjoyed himself and really enjoyed watching his talented young dog, Highfill’s High Tide continue to improve. Following on Blake’s foot heels, we had a short visit from our friend, Pennsylvania grouse dog trainer, Joe McCarl who has a summer camp about four hours to the southeast in North Dakota. Joe spend a few days up here with his dogs in the cooler temperatures and got a chance to see Ebony in some workouts. Ebony is the grandson of his great grouse champion, Hard Driving Bev who he retired this summer and put in the care of his young grandson, Cole. Two year old Ebony continues to show his great strength and potential on the prairie. Joe was impressed and proud. He laughed when he saw “Joe” back, claiming that he did not inherit that from his grandmother! While Joe M. was with us, Chris Mathan also came out from Maine with her camera in tow. Strideaway cohort, Chris and I had some very special moments... like my attempt to flush roadside chickens while she stood camera ready, on one occasion both of us waist-deep in a canola field!

Alabama Championship
Congratulations once again to Nolan Ledbetter, owner of Patriote or “Jim”. We were very pleased with Jim’s true all age race and two limb finds garnering his win of the 64 dog Alabama Championship. We would like to thank judges Charlie Frank Bryant, Collierville, TN and William Smith, Moscow, TN for presiding over this notable championship with their expertise. The club did a wonderful job in putting on this trial, a very personable group of individuals who are dedicated to hosting a successful field trial. The Runner-Up was Amirage handled by Randy Downs. Congratulations to Randy and owner Dr. Fred Corder.
